Technique

Improve your technical skills and become a master of photography with themed guides and tutorials from the experts.

Technique is the bridge between the photo you saw in your head and the one that ends up on the card. It's the craft underneath the creativity, and the good news is that almost all of it can be learned. This is where we get into the how: composition, light, timing, and the small decisions that lift a snapshot into something worth printing.

Whether you're learning to use leading lines to pull a viewer into the frame, getting your head around long exposures for silky water and light trails, or working out how to photograph reflections without your own shadow ruining the shot, you'll find a practical, plain-English guide here. We're big believers in the idea that understanding the rules is what lets you break them well.

Some of these techniques take five minutes to grasp and a lifetime to master, and that's rather the point. Pick one, take it out into the world, and shoot it badly a few times until it clicks. There's no shortcut for time behind the camera, but there's plenty we can do to make that time count for more. Work through these at your own pace, and come back when you're ready for the next idea.
