Follow our top tips to help you select the best name for your photography business, and how to set it up on your Picfair Store

Why should you carefully consider the name of your photography store?

When stepping into the world of selling your photography, one of the most critical decisions you'll make is selecting the right name for your business, website, and/or photography store.

Your chosen name will become the face of your brand and represent the photography you create. With Picfair Stores, you can choose a name for your store that will appear in the store URL (web address), and on the header of your store that is prominently displayed across all pages.

The instructions below show you how to set up the name for your store, and you'll also see our top tips on creating the perfect name for your photography practice.

So let's get started...

How to configure your Picfair Store name:

Your store URL:

You can quickly and easily configure the name of your store for the URL (web address) from the "ABOUT PAGE" of your "STORE SETTINGS", accessible from your Picfair Dashboard.

When on the page, you'll see a field where you can free-type your store name for your URL, please note any edits will change your unique store URL. So if you've been sharing your URL, make sure you update the URL everywhere with the updated information.

The name as displayed on your Store Header:

You can edit this information first in "Your Account" where under the name field you can enter any text you like (it doesn't need to be your actual name).

And then in the "HEADER AND NAVIGATION" section of "STORE SETTINGS" accessible from your Store Dashboard select "Use Name" to display the corresponding text on your Picfair Store (where you can also customise the font and size that the text will be displayed).

As always, remember to select "Save Changes" once you're done with configuring your store name.

Editor's Note:

For branding and consistency, we highly recommend keeping both your store URL name and the name displayed in your store header the same.

Top tips for choosing the perfect name for your Picfair Store:

1 Define your brand identity:

Before brainstorming names, take the time to clarify your brand identity. Reflect on the type of photography you specialise in, your artistic style, and the emotions you aim to evoke through your work. Are you a wedding photographer capturing the joy of love, a wildlife photographer revealing the beauty of nature, or a portrait artist highlighting individual personalities? Understanding your brand identity will help you create a name that perfectly aligns with your vision.

2 Be memorable and catchy:

A memorable name is vital for any business. Aim for simplicity, uniqueness, and avoid complex or difficult-to-spell words. A catchy name is easier to recall, and word-of-mouth referrals can be a powerful marketing tool. Consider using alliteration or a playful pun while maintaining a professional and timeless feel.

3 Emphasise your niche:

Your photography business name should instantly convey your specialisation to potential clients. For example, if you focus on landscape photography, consider incorporating words like "Vistascapes" or "Horizon Captures" into your name. A name that reflects your niche will help attract the right audience and set clear expectations.

4 Make it personal:

Adding a personal touch to your photography business name can make it more inviting and relatable. Consider using your own name, as it can establish a strong connection between you and your clients. Personal names also carry a sense of authenticity and trust. If you want to create a personal brand experience, consider using just your name for your Picfair Store, allowing clients to connect directly with the artist behind the lens.

5 Conduct research:

Before finalising your name, conduct thorough research to ensure it still needs to be put in use by another photography business. Check domain name availability, social media handles, and trademark databases to avoid potential legal issues.

5 Test with friends and family:

Share your potential photography business names with friends and family to get their honest feedback. Ask them about their initial impressions and whether the name aligns with your photography style and values. Constructive feedback from those who know you well can be invaluable.

6 Think long-term:

While choosing a name that represents your current photography focus is essential, consider its long-term viability. As your photography style evolves and expands, you'll want a name that can grow with you and will feel free in the future.

7 Consider the branding potential:

A well-chosen photography business name should lend itself well to branding opportunities. Think about how it will look on your website, business cards, promotional materials, and watermarked on your images. Consistent branding strengthens your brand's recognition and professionalism.

8 Avoid buzzwords:

While using trendy buzzwords in your photography business name may be tempting, remember that trends come and go. Opt for timeless words that will be updated, as you want your brand to remain relevant for years.

9 Check for domain availability:

Before finalising your name, check if the corresponding domain is available for registration. A domain that matches your business name will make it easier for potential clients to find you online.
